Little Corn island Nicaragua

Litte Corn island lies off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua and has to be one of the most chilled islands I’ve ever had the pleasure of exploring. Colours are a big part of this gorgeous country and here is no exception – below are a few images I took on a shoot early this morning. I’ve utterly fallen in love with Nicaragua; it’s one of the most beautiful, relaxed and friendly places on our rather lovely planet. Interspered with the photos is some info and advice about how to get here and what to do.

How to get to Little Corn island Nicaragua

Fist stop is Big Corn island and the easiest way is by air from Managua. La Costena have three daily flights and return tickets are about $150. When you land at Big Corn airport there will be plenty of people offering you a lift to the jetty where the boats depart for Little Corn island at 11.30 am and 4.30 pm and the voyage takes about half an hour.

What’s the diving like on Little Corn ?

This is a question I found hard to answer before I came here as there’s plenty of online mis-information about Hammerhead shark sightings. Most of the coral is either dead (on the East coast completely dead and covered in algae) or in a very bad state. But I also had some lovely encounters with Eagle Rays including a beautiful sighting of a squadron of eleven on a fly by and nurse sharks are also seen here. My summary is that if you’ve had the pleasure of diving parts of the world with great diving then you’ll be very dissapointed. It’s certainly not an island that you’d come to specifically for the diving. But the other reasons for visiting Little Corn make it a place that while you’re here, it would be rude not to try the odd underwater encounter. Hammerhead sharks are very very rarely seen off the coast but don’t believe the hype on the web about this. I dived with Dolphin Dive Little Corn.

What’s the general vibe like on the island ?

Friendly, chilled and very relaxed. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of my interactions with the people I’ve met here and Little Corn is small enough to amble all the way around in half a day. I stayed at Dream Catcher which is a locally owned place with three nice rooms and a wonderful breakfast served in their beach side bar.

What’s the food like ?

There’s several bars and restaurants scattered around the island which serve the usual selection of dishes including great lobster and fish. Word of mouth led me to discover the talents of a local lady called Darinia Bonilla whose passion for food and cooking is incredible. Her mobile number is (+505) 8744 3419 and she cooks the most amazing food in her house. Ask around on the West Coast and you’ll get pointed in her direction. Here’s a photo of her cooking last night’s supper for us.
