Borneo orangutan photography tour

Huge thanks to everyone who came on this year’s Borneo orangutan photography tour where we raised another chunk of money to support the incredible conservation work of the Orangutan Foundation. Over the last 15 years these trips have raised tens of £1000s for orangutan conservation and if you come on a future orangutan trip you’ll be inspired how we’ve protected this area.

A few photos and a video clip from this year’s Borneo orangutan photography tour are below with more to follow.  Firstly a clip of a mum and baby orangutan following one of my guests through the forest.

And we also witnessed an orangutan being released back into the wild on this trip which is always such a humbling experience.

As always it was utterly orangutan tastic this year with so many baby orangutans including this one which was just four weeks old.

Proboscis monkeys are endangered due to habitat loss as they mainly live in low lying peat swamps but here we see so many every day that you’d think they were common. It was only when I looked closer at the mum leaping though the trees with its baby that I realised its offspring was breastfeeding during the flight. More photos of Proboscis monkeys are here

Sun bears are the rarest bear on our planet and I’ve only ever glimpsed them in the wild twice in over 25 years of exploring these forests. But on my November trip this year there was one on a log by the side of the river affording us an amazing sighting of these elusive animals.

Good sightings of over 40 species of birds this year including this crested serpent eagle.

And daily close up sightings of numerous kingfishers. The one below is a white throated but we also saw lots of stork-billed and blue eared. I really must find time to properly go through my images.

You need a lot of luck to see snakes as they usually sense you coming way before you see them, but I found this green pit viper curled up in a tree slowly digesting its last meal.

Better post another few orangutan shots from the trips …
